Such an output is extraordinary, whether for an out and out sports car or a powerful 4 door saloon.
But for Bentley's engineers, and
for drivers of the Turbo RT, a mor significant increase can be found in
the
torque figures for its specially
tuned turbocharged and intercooled 6.75 litre V8.
The Turbo R's maximum torque of
553 lb.ft., under hard acceleration, gave a sensation in one motoring journal
as "a tidal wave of uninterupted
power". But the Turbo RT's maximum torque, attained between
2000 and 3450 rpm, even eclipses
this with a gigantic
590 lb.ft.
To the person behind the wheel,
the sensation of driving a Turbo RT is outside the normal frame of reference.
There are huge reserves of ample,
instant, controllable power, at any speed
from 15 mph to almost ten times that figure.
With the Turbo RT, the over-riding
sensation, from idling speed through to the red line, is of
inexorable power, of the seat pressing
into one's back accompanied by the deep, muted growl of the engine.
The chassis is equally impressive;
Bentley's electronic traction assistance system,
powerful micro-alloy
antilock brakes and automatic ride
control
allow the driver to enjoy the full
performance capabillities of the Turbo RT.
From the outside, detail styling
touches such as the Turbo RT's mesh
grille, distictive new alloy wheels and
body colour bumpers with bright
mesh covered air scoops give
the Bentley a powerful presence,
the understated marks of a uniquely
powerful and comfortable high-performance four door saloon.
